What is Periodontal Maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance is an ongoing preventive therapy that is recommended for patients who have been treated for gum disease or have a higher risk of developing it. This treatment involves regular visits to our Cherry Hill, NJ office for professional cleaning, examination, and monitoring of the gums and bones around the teeth.

The purpose of periodontal maintenance is to prevent the recurrence or progression of gum disease and maintain the health of the gums and teeth. The maintenance program usually includes an oral examination, periodontal charting, scaling and root planing, and personalized home care instructions.

Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical deep cleaning procedure performed to reduce gum pockets and encourage reattachment between the tooth roots and gum tissue.

  • Scaling involves the use of specialized instruments, such as ultrasonic scalers or hand scalers, to remove the buildup of plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces and below the gum line. Our provider will carefully clean each tooth, removing any plaque or tartar that has accumulated around the tooth roots and in the pockets between the teeth and gums.
  • Root planing involves the smoothing of the tooth root surfaces to remove any rough spots or bacterial buildup. This smoothing helps to eliminate any remaining bacteria and facilitates the healing of the gums, allowing them to reattach to the teeth.

Scaling and root planing may be performed in one or more appointments, depending on the extent of the gum disease. In some cases, antibiotics may also be prescribed to help control bacterial infection.

Personalized Periodontal Maintenance Plans

Periodontal maintenance plans are individualized based on a patient’s unique needs. Our providers will work with the patient to develop a personalized maintenance plan that includes the frequency of visits and any additional necessary treatments or therapies.

Periodontal maintenance is recommended every three to four months rather than the standard biannual cleanings performed by a dentist. These regular visits are critical to maintaining healthy gums and teeth. Patients who maintain good oral hygiene habits and follow their maintenance plans are more likely to maintain good oral health and prevent gum disease from progressing.

Overall, periodontal maintenance is an essential aspect of maintaining optimal oral health for patients with gum disease. If you have any questions about periodontal maintenance or scaling and root planing, please do not hesitate to contact our office. We would be happy to help you!
